Osage Orange

Ever wonder what these are?

I know the are sought after by the neighborhood squirrels but I always wondered if this orange is edible. After all it is called an osage orange. Chop one in half and you will see a pithy core surrounded by up to 200 small seeds (smaller than sunflower seeds).  In addition to ripping apart the tough, stringy fruit, there is a slimy husk around each individual seed that must also be removedbefore the seed can be eaten.  If you have the time to get them out that is . Once you get them out and taste the seeds you'll find them to match the taste of a raw sunflower seed. Also the wood from the trees are often used in making guitars! Edible and musical!
